Brian Immel says...
Going Transparent

As someone who doesn’t blog constantly and who typically keep ideas as close to his chest as possible, I’m going to try something fairly bold.

Transparency. (Cue the dramatic music)

Back when I was a working journalist, Steve Smith, Editor-in-Chief of The Spokesman-Review at the time, pushed transparency hard. The newsroom even had a live webcam for anyone to spy in on our meetings.

Likewise at BigDoor transparency is key once again. Every document created is accessible by anyone in the company. Numbers, facts and figures flow throughout the office for anyone to take advantage.

It’s a breath of fresh honest air.

But the simple truth is I adore transparency, but never practice it myself.

Then a few weeks ago Brad Feld, one of BigDoor’s investors, came by the office. He dished out wisdom like he was chewing bubble gum.

Successful companies he said usually exhibit the following… Total transparency, clear ability to communicate what they are doing and a low tolerance for mediocrity.

All of a sudden the idea stuck. Then with a swift kick in the pants by coworker Collin Watson who simply told me to “share what I was thinking”, I decided to try it myself.

So here’s the idea. In an attempt to stay honest and true I will put pen to paper and document “what I’m thinking”.

I aim refine my ability to communicate my ideas, and own up to my faults. In the process I hope to learn more about the subjects I’ll explore and myself at the same time.

Transparency isn’t sexy, but you can’t ignore the results. So if you see something I’m doing, agree or disagree with what I’m saying or have something to add to the journey I encourage you to join the conversation.

(fade out dramatic music)
